Major Wolfgang Späte earned the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on October 5, 1941 as Oberleutnant und Flugzeugführer in the 5. Staffel/ Jagdgeschwader 54 and the oakleves on April 23, 1942 as Oberleutnant und Staffelkapitän of the 5. Staffel/ Jagdgeschwader 54.
