Operation Market Garden was an Allied military operation during the Second World War fought in the German-occupied Netherlands from 17 to 25 September 1944.
It's objective was to create a 64 mile (103 km) salient into German territory forming a bridgehead over the Nederrijn (Lower Rhine River), creating an Allied invasion route into northern Germany.
This was to be achieved by two sub-operations. Market, the air aspect with responsibility of the First Allied Airborne Army and Garden, the ground aspect with responsibility of XXX Corps of the British Second Army.
The operation was partly a failure on the allied side and the casualties were very high.
Estimated numbers wo were killed during this operation are between 15.326-17.200 troops and approximatly 500 Dutch Civilians.
We may never forget those people that lost their lives, were wounded or took part in this operation for the liberation of Holland and Europe.
